I've been drinking scotch since the early 70's and Johnnie Walker Black has always been my 'go to' / everyday scotch.....I'm certainly not a scotch purist as I like a good bar size glass of scotch & water on occasion.

About two years ago I tried sherry finished Lasanta and Dalmore 12 (neat or with ice only) and now I find that JWB by comparison (even when mixed with water) is too harsh, strong, peaty etc.....BTW, I favor Dalmore 12 just a tad more over the Lasanta and Dalmore is what I refer to now as my 'sippin' scotch.

Now that I have found my sippin' scotch I need a replacement for JWB......blend or single malt what is a good everyday, scotch & water, non peaty, smooth scotch in the same price range (less is also good :)) as JWB ?

Monkey Shoulder is a great blended.

I love Lasanta and The Balvenie Doublewood. Both are sherry finished, as is Macallan 12. Those are just a few options.

Quinta Ruban is another I like quite a bit.

Dewar's is not so great, if you ask me.

Honestly, I'd give the Jameson Caskmates a try... it's very smooth with a splash of H2O and has a slightly sweet finish, I didn't find it smoky either. I think I paid $32.99 for it.

Bruchladdich makes an unpeated Scotch that's actually pretty good. Comes in a baby blue bottle.

In the 1960’s legal drinking age was 18yrs. in New York. My Uncle Dick was a Pilot for Eastern Airlines and a WWII Army Air Force Veteran Pilot, before that. He developed a great lifetime friendship with alcohol during the war and introduced me to his old friend when I came of age. Dick liked good scotches and cheap beer. 25 yr Chivas Regal and Pinch Bottle Haig&Haig were always stocked in his cabinet. When he took a bottle off the shelf, it never went back because he didn’t collect empty bottles. Haig&Haig was my favorite but the old family sold the distillery and I haven’t had any since. The old Chivas was okay, but not equal to its competitor.
An old friend from the Corps (Bill Hall) now a Boston area Architect, will argue that the only scotch is Famous Grouse which he says is a single malt. He drinks it neat, or in a faggardly ‘Rob Roy’ made with Martini & Rossi Sweet Vermouth, a couple of dashes of Angostura Bitters, but Bill omits the Cherry.

REPENT YOU HEATHENS.......... Alcohol is the DEVIL!!!!....... :D Nanna was a JWB everyday sipper and a JW Blue label special occasion drinker. I hardly drink anything these days but some Blue Label is pretty good. Got no idea if it fits in any of those definitions though
