I was browsing something and the next thing I know, my PC is locked up with a big red screen that I couldn't exit from, telling me to call a toll-free number. It was windows support or some such name. I tried shutting the thing off, and when I turned it back on, the red screen would come back. Finally, I disconnected it from the web and shut it off, and that seems to have worked, as I am here to annoy some of you once more.

Was this ransomware or what?

And before some of you ask, I was not surfing naughty websites. This time anyway.

Virus scans are mostly worthless.

I would take a picture of the red screen and post it here.

you might have to revert to a previous condition via the bios screen.
In order to take a picture of it, I'd have to go back there and that is something that I'd just as soon not do.

The thing just took over and wouldn't let me exit from the screen or from the net, as I tried to disconnect several times and even shut my PC off. I let it sit for a few moments and turned the PC back on, and it came back. It said something about my credit card information, passwords, etc. being in danger and to call this toll-free number.

I finally remembered something I did with my old PC and when I shut it off, I also disconnected it from the net. That seemed to have worked, because here I am.

When i worked for the Gov in automation and there was a computer issue the first thing we did was unplug it from the wall.
98% of the time that fixed it.

Do a ctrl-alt/delete to open task mgr then on the 1st tab see what the name of the popup is and then highlight it and select end process. If it does not turn off the red screen or you can't even get to task mgr it's likely a virus.

One time I had that problem and after a search of the internet found a fix to eliminate the "Notice." It was easy.
