I've always been told that if you learn to make good landings in Oklahoma you can land about anywhere. That's one reason the Army Air Corp had so many training fields in Oklahoma (which are a lot of the small town airports we have to day!)

That's what I've always heard about Wichita too. The whole dang state is one big emergency field. And you're correct. Don't come here if you're rusty on crosswinds!

Ponca City trained the RAF pilots in WWII. Some that crashed in training and died have a special place in a local cemetery. Every year, relatives still come to visit the graves.

Yes I have heard that. Enid, Perry, Page in OKC(formally Cimarron Airport), El Reno, & Ardmore were other training fields that I can think of off the top of my head

Darr School was the name of the facility in Ponca.
I took my Junior Rifle club rimfire training there when I was 11 or 12 years old in one of the old barracks where the pilots lived. I think there is still one or two old hangers out there still in use for other purposes.
A link for those interested.
