This past weekend I RO’d the PRS match in Ramona OK. It was my first precision rifle match and I was definitely GREEN. Fortunately one of the RO’s on my stage had experience RO’ing pistol matches. Most of the shooters were helpful early on and we ended up with a good system. Only one argument from a kid that claimed target impact and the RO calling a frame impact.

We had some difficulties with certain groups shooting targets on the next stage, which thru off their RO calls.

I was thankful for the opportunity to get involv‭ed. I learned watching every group come thru twice in two days. Rather than being a noob shooter exposed to one squad, I was exposed to every squad. It was good to see some shooters really think outside the box. Great match.

I’d love to hear from others about their RO experience and tips.

dont ever let a shooter intimidate you because he looks like a good shooter, or is well known.

Or if he just thinks he's a good shooter.
I had a guy argue with me for 10 minutes because I scored a single Alpha on a target. He swore up and down it was 2 shots in this obviously single hole on the paper. He said he knew it was 2 shots in there cause he's done it 3 times in the past couple months....... right......
I wouldn't change the score and neither would the range master. He ended up cussing my name as he walked away pissy. So I smiled and cheerfully said "have a nice day sir". He didn't like that either lol

We didn’t get any intimidation this time. One kid argued about a frame impact at 250 yards with a 6” square. RO never saw the plate move, but heard the same audible as the shooter. RO stuck to his call.

With 20-30 mph winds we had a lot of misjudged holds putting shots on one side of the plate. On the 500 yard IPSC target it was sometimes difficult to call one nicking the edge. Trace wasn’t always visible.

Not an RO but do enjoy helping at some of the competitions and helped a year or two ago at the state sectionals. Anyway a guy argued his way into a point because the hole in a barrel was "too small" for his caliber. It was right on the edge and the plastic barrel deformed allowing the bullet through to strike the target but ended up looking like a .223 sized hole.

With a major competition it would probably have been good to have a steel rod to stick the hole and if the target hole and the barrel hole lines up it' s a miss since all barriers are considered non penetrable.

I was fortunate enough during my competition time to shoot and RO with a GREAT bunch of guys. Even the assholes (you jerks know who you are ) were sweethearts. :bighug:

ROing helped me become a better shooter (not that I was ever that good) and I have some absolutely fantastic memories of my competition days. The friendships I formed during those few years are still dear to me though I don't get to see those guys often I do run across a few of them here and there every once in a while. Crusty bunch of old farts but then I wouldn't have them any other way. :sunbath:

No. It was some guy at the Area 4 championship in Tulsa.

There was also a whole other group of guys who gave everyone a hard time when it came to scoring. All claiming they had nothing but Alphas, their times were actually 2 seconds shorter than what was called etc.
They all had their jerseys, which were probably barely given to them by their sponsors, and they thought they were the kings of $#!+ mountain.
I knew right away they were d-bags cause they kept calling themselves "the super squad"
ROing at major matches brings in the best people.
