The day before Moore, on May 19, a tornado tore thru Shawnee..

My grandma was being stubborn, wouldn't go to the cellar. The tornado lifted shortly after this video was shot and the center of circulation went over our house N. of Shawnee. Wind, rain and big hall pounded the house. Tornado debris fell all over our yard, and that was enough to make grandma realize she was being foolish.

The next day when the tornado started pounding Moore, you didn't have to ask her twice. She was feeble and could barely make it down the stairs, but she went in no problem that day. That was the last time Grandma would ever go to the cellar, she passed away later that fall.

Good and bad memories about that Moore tornado..

Here, but occasionally There.

Question for you: I read the story and clicked on the photo of you with your grandmother. In addition to seeing the bond between the three of you, my eyes were also drawn to the pictures on the walls. (Yeah, it's the photographer in me.) Two of those look like hand painted paintings. Did your grandmother paint by any chance? The reason I ask is because my mother taught herself to paint.

Oh, and the one painting that can be fully seen looks like a western area, which made me wonder where she grew up or lived at some time.

I come from a multi-generational family of medical professionals and first responders. I made it through my first clinical of nursing school at SNU (RN was gonna be my second career) when I realized I was gonna wind up in the pen if I stuck with it. A ride-along on the upcoming July 4th with my LEO husband just cemented the fact in my mind that it takes a special kind of person to do what you folks do and I was not that kind of person. I posted about it here back in the day and many laughs were had at my expense. And that is perfectly okay with me.

Thank you for your service. And your wife and family for their sacrifice. People truly do not know what you guys walk through without giving it a thought for those of us who wonder wtf.

LIKE ANY OTHER DAY.
Today, Five years ago, right now, I was at work. Hoping to get off soon. On my way home, released at 730am. I would run up on a car near an intersection with a flat tire. I was still in uniform, but off duty, headed home. I told them to pull into the 7-11 up the street. I would change their tire at that 7-11, it was a mom driving her high school daughter to school. At this same 7-11 hours later, two adults and one baby would be killed.

I was thinking of you this morning, but I couldn't remember your name. We were swapping something, and we talked about that day. My wife and I had closed on our home, just south of Westmore HS, and had driven back to Muskogee. As we pulled into our driveway, the radio started giving reports of the tornado, and they mentioned the intersection of Western and 134th. My two grandsons were students at Eastlake school. We had given a key to the house to my daughter and she knew there was a shelter in the house. We couldn't reach them our our son-in-
law, so we turned back for a rapid trip back across I40 , only to be stopped by OHP at Okema due to the storms. All of the family was fine, but my youngest, now 14, is still on edge in storms. My daughter is a 5th grade teacher and sees the fear in the kids eyes each time we have drills or actual storms.

You told me of your actions that day, and I admire you and your service. We are blessed to have so many folks like you, and the necessary resources to handle these events.. Thank you!

I remember going to the Home Depot parking lot where various agencies were organizing and lots of people with medical experience through the reserves or former military service had responded. They didn’t have enough trained first reeponders to go around so eventually they asked a few veterans and marine reservists “do you mind dead bodies?” We all said essentially “well someone has to do it.” The thinking was that if a trained medic or EMT came upon a body they could simply move on to a living patient and we would take care of moving the deceased. I chose intentionally to not remember the name of the school we went to first, but I cannot for the life of me forget how to get there. I’ve tried to no avail.
