I bought a deck boat that I plan to use as a fish and ski for the family. I've been looking into Fishfinders with GPS and from what I've read SI and Chirp are the way to go. Ideally, I only want to spend around 450, but I'm willing to spend a little more if that's what is best. I've found decent 5" models in my price range, but some people recommend 7" or larger which adds a couple hundred more onto the price. Anyone have recommendations?

Those are very nice; if I planned on using it year round on a bass boat I would spend more- wanting to stay under $800. I have been researching today and I think I have it narrowed down to the Hummingbird Helix 7 SI, Garmin Echomap 73sv with the gt series transducer, and Lowrance Elite 7 ti.

I would check the bargain bin at Cabelas. I was able to score a nice Garmin unit for about $500 and the retail on it was $1298. It was one of their display models. They had several back there when I was looking.

I spent many hours comparing fish finder/GPS units and came to the conclusion that the Humminbird SI/CHIRP units offer the best bang for the buck, based on watts of power, screen size and resolution. The Humminbird Helix 5 CHIRP SI GPS Gen 2 is right around your price limit, but I'll tell you right now that you'd be far happier with the Helix 7. With the ability to split screen information, 5" is just too small to see important detail.

Walmart has the 7 for $638 with free shipping:

Also, the LakeMaster+ lake maps are worth the extra price over the Navionics Gold HotMaps. Much more detailed and features you can actually use.
