The Wife and I are going to go down to the Florida Keys sometime this winter. We like B&B's over hotels, good local restaurants, cool things to see and do (besides the norm of guzzling beer and scuba/snorkeling). We did a seafood-oriented vacay to Seattle and Pikes Market a few years back, then followed that with a week on Mt Desert Island in Maine where we did our best to eradicate the lobster population, now we want to go to the Keys to escape the winter, sample Caribbean seafood, wear flips flops with socks, see some cool stuff, hang out on the dock/pier/waterfront etc. Suggestions, recommendations etc. are welcomed.

EDIT: We will probably fly to Miami, rent a car and drive on down. Probably stay a few nights mid-way, (Marathon? Islamorada? Key Largo?) then on to Key West for a few more picturesque evenings.

The Mel Fisher treasure museum is neat.

BTW, it's about an 8 hour drive from Miami to Key West. US 1 has stoplights in every little town along the way.

Isn’t there a turnpike now?
Granted, it's been several years since I've been, but Google Maps still looks like the Overseas Highway (US 1 from Key Largo to Key West) is part divided highway, part Main Street. The Florida Turnpike is on the mainland, and has been there forever, but the Overseas Highway doesn't look to have changed. Please let me know when you get back, though!

Key Largo is a cool place to stay. Stay on the Carib side. Place we stayed at was literally on the water. Sidewalk to the front door, you had to turn right or step into the gulf. Water is 2’ deep for a half mile if you like wading for bonefish.
