Managed this morning starting about sunrise to get in some pretty good training on shooting from the car and using a car as cover. However my son who shoots IDPA has all these habits that are just not real world applicable. We were running a drill where you drive to a mock intersection then engage targets around the vehicle that are showing threats, In this case toy guns mounted on the target stands. My son wants to clear his firearm after every run and I'm like son why would you in a deadly force encounter with multiple threats would you render your weapon clear before holstering it? Same thing doing magazine changes he will run across open ground to a barricade come to a complete stop and do a mag change. I'm like why would you run with a dry weapon when you might need to reengage a target? Make that mag change as you are moving. After about four hours of scenarios and malfunction drills I think it was getting into his head that we are doing defensive training not gun gamesmanship.

I understand your way of thinking (the same as mine) but is it going to mess with his IDPA shoots? I don’t know just curious
Well he has access to our range 7 days a week. We can shoot in three directions on it. Have a pile of steel targets and paper targets available. His mom, myself and son in law went through over 500 rounds of Remington 115 FMJ with me picking up the cost today. He shoots IDPA maybe once a month so my concern is that IDPA does not bleed over into his daily carry muscle memory.

I don't understand why you are blaming IDPA, since none of this behavior is required by IDPA rules since 2017.
Strongly suggest a close reading of current IDPA rules: Load whenever you need, cover or not. Re engage whenever you want. Shoot on the move as you discover targets.

This ain't your Daddy's 2005 IDPA rules anymore. Check out the NEW IDPA!

The one I really had trouble with was him wanting to clear his gun after just shooting multiple targets. I'm like son if you practice that kata you will do it under stress. We don't train to survive a deadly force encounter to clear our weapon show it to some person on the scene then snap the trigger on an empty hole. Like folks I work with who don't want to drop their magazines on the ground or want to pick up ammo during malfunction drills off the ground. Same reason I will never let any of my loved ones shoot on a commercial indoor range unless part of a class environment. Rules like no rapid fire or head shots teach bad muscle memory.
