"to have in his or her possession or under his or her immediate control". I have been told by police that if gun is in locked safe and mother does not have any access to safe, i.e. does not know combination, then no felony. The problem is that once that gun comes out of safe and mom is in the house, she could gain access to gun. Then if things went south, then mom would have another felony and I think son would also have a felony for allowing the fellon to gain access. Not sure about son.

Hmm. Gordon Liddy used to say on his radio show that, as a convicted felon, he did not own any firearms, but Mrs. Liddy had quite a nice collection.
