I am sure this one could go in a LOT of different places. But I think this section should be helpful to anyone who has or drives a car while potentially going off road this time of year.

I think "fired" will be in someones future after this one though.

LOL, well that was my first thought when smoke was visible. At the very least get to where it's shoulder and gravel on that side then out the fire. Then again he didn't seem to know exactly how to make a fire extinguisher work either. I just wonder if the ticket for 93 in a 70 was worth the cost of the cruiser.... Or if they attempted to charge the driver with the destruction of the cruiser.

I've seen stranger. I've seen a criminal charged with murder 1 under the felony murder rule when an off-duty cop was killed driving drunk to respond to a call, and I've heard talk of charging a criminal with murder 1 (again under the felony murder rule) when two news helos covering the event had a midair collision (I don't know if that one ever went anywhere).

Years ago, when Catalytic converters were the size of a NY phone book, I had spilled coffee on my lap and needed to pull over. No shoulder but grass was not high as well as being dead as a dog because of a drought and 100 degree heat. I saw the smoke off the passenger window and backed up till I saw the fire and that I started another one where I stopped. Pulled my car on the Hwy and made sure it wasn't on fire. The next hour was spent with, a dozen people who stopped to help, beating out the fire that had spread fast.
Never did that again even though I think they have a heat shield now.

OHP lost one because of that if I remember right a few years ago off I40 during a chase

Digging up an old thread but I know an OHP Trooper whose cruiser did go up in flames on the median of I-40 near Sallisaw. I don’t think it was during or after a chase on that one. I believe he pulled onto the median to do paperwork and noticed some smoke after a few minutes. I’ll ask him to relive it for me next time I see him [emoji1787]

This happens with our line techs. They typically will pull onto the side of the road to use their bucket trucks on the main line. The exhaust will catch dry grass on fire. Typically though they catch it in time and put it out with their fire extinguisher.
