Ruger Precision Rimfire & 10/22 can share magazines. Single shot mags are also available for the beginners.

Several years ago I found some refurbished Marlin single shot bolt .22s for my great nephews. They were under $100.

And, what kid doesn't want a lever action?

I vote for the ruger 10/22. I'm surprised that this thread does not have the most replies in the history of osa since you're asking for opinions.

Did I mention the 10/22?

You can have the "truck gun/beater gun" thats handy in the takedown case and you dont worry about...

Or the one that shoots 1/2 MOA with all kinds of options available.

Or the one thats just dang pretty with nice wood.

Or you can have all 3...or more!!!

For the money, the 10/22 is hard to beat. They can be finicky and accuracy is plinking quality. The S&W 15-22 is about $100 more, and is a great gun that handles LOP issues for the little ones. For a "nicer" .22LR, the CZ 512 is quality and probably better than the current production Remington 552 Speedmaster. At the expensive end is the Browning SA-22.

Cabelas and gunshows are usually littered with old .22s. My uncle picked up an old Winchester 74, cleaned up the stock with a new coat of tru-oil and had the receiver and barrel reblued. It shoots great. Don't know how handy you are, but spending some time with Grandpa fixing up their guns would be a lifetime of memories.

There's a lot to be said for bolt actions too, and I'm not sure why you didn't include them. CZ's 455 series are great quality and stupid accurate.

I assume he's talking cheaper...but if you want to spend a few bucks and have a rifle that your kids will be proud of forever...the BL22s are AWESOME. They have a 30 degree throw on the lever (not 90 or so like most lever) so they're quick shooting too.
I always felt like the SA22 was a bit "dainty" for a guy my size. The BL22 feels better, but both are smaller than a 10/22. Not an issue for kids, but for big guys...they feel like Red Ryders.

(I apparently have more .22's than I realized)

I bought my son a BL22 once upon a time. I kind of thought it was "dainty" too. Fine for kids, but it ain't as substantial as my Marlin 39.
