I have a S&W M&P 40 Shield. I bought my first IWB middle of back holster and it kinda sucks. When I pull it , it comes out with the holster. The shop guy says it just needs worn in like a ball glove. So I need to put up with a handicapped defense for who knows how long? I need a good, unhindered, MOB holster now. Suggestions?

Shop guy is an idiot. At worst, when a holster is new, it would be hard to get the gun out, holster should stay attached to the belt, ie you just wouldn't be able to get the gun out. Any quality holster should be able to do that.

If you like the holster you have and want to do away with the spring retention plastic or metal clips, you could use some Utiliclip clips:

My wife never wears a belt and they work great for her.

I wouldn't say the shop guy was an idiot, uniformed and clueless perhaps, but not an idiot. Maybe not anyway. A holster is NOT like a ball glove. A ball glove needs to be pliable; a holster needs to stay stiff, to ensure retention of the gun. Never use saddle soap, Vaseline, mink oil, or any other leather softeners on a holster unless you want to ruin its properties and turn it into what becomes basically a leather sock.

Pics, brand and model of holster (i.e.; {PIC of holster} Desantis, Cozy Partner) would help those of us who are holster-smarties help you. Oh...and Utiliclips are solid pieces of gear too, by the way. I'm just not sure they are your answer without the pics and more info on the holster.

Ok, I for some reason, cannot upload pictures via my pad. I will have to wait until work tonight after 9 Pm. No big hurry anyway. I appreciate your advice . The only thing I can say without pictures is it's a Jason Winnie brand.

Why do you want a small of back holster? I ask because that is a generally frowned upon way to carry a firearm.

Agreed, slower draw, if you end up on your back, its gonna hurt like hell. Cant get to it in the car, and again, when on your back. I personally carry AIWB, and have never found a con other than where an AD/ND would go, and haven't found anything I cant carry in this position.
