I like AVG Free. It can get a bit nagging at times (to get you to upgrade), but otherwise I like it.
Avast has also be good in the past.
Also, the built in Windows Defender has vastly improved in recent years.

Just my $0.02. I always advise you research your options.

Like Catt57 mentioned, Windows Defender has come a long, long way for protection and is more than adequate for most consumer-level users. Up from that I'd go direct to ESET.

Though spending money on AV while Defender is perfectly fine is a waste of money IMHO.

Just helped a friend with a problem. He was running Malwarebites which didn't catch/fix it. I downloaded AVT and it found and quarantined the offending file. I don't run anything but also do not do anything stupid like clicking on links in emails and going to web sites that I don't know.

I have used Avast free for years on several computers with great results. You do get nagged to buy the paid edition but the free works just fine.

I don't run anything (but I also am the house computer geek) but I can vouch for Avast and Windows Defender. My wife's avast has caught a few things she clicked on and Defender caught all but one my stepson has gotten (the one was a new variant distributed through a free game on steam).

I used at one point in time or another Avast or AVG free versions. Once I started messing with crypto the antivirus started deleting my miners so I have since ran without. If I come across something I question I use ClamWIN to scan it or just run it in a sandbox to see if it is worthwhile.

The big names are expensive for a reason, they advertise....
