Talking about bugs and blades, I generally seem to get around 14 to 16 months out of the blades but I do try and wipe the actual blade down whenever I clean the windshield. I also get a little pack of the ArmorAll wipes and wipe the blades down at least a couple times and then let them dry really well. That includes driving on a 6000 mile bugageddon trip.

The wiper blades Ford put on my truck at the factory lasted about 18 months. Longest I've ever had a pair go before replacing them. Outside of that 6 months seems to be the norm.

I don't know why, but the factory blades seem to last the longest and work the best.

I went with factory Honda blades on the wife's crv because I could buy them off of Amazon.

Update:

The PIAA silicone blades that I purchased in Oct 2016 are still going strong.

I need to look at something different or shop in a store that sells more blades that keep the rubber fresh.
Every time I buy blades they seem to be dried out and don't wipe, just squeak across the windshield.

These are not the firearms you're looking for.

I always wipe down my new blades with rubbing alcohol. Supposedly does something to the rubber to make it softer and last longer. Seems to work well, and it makes 'em really quiet!

Alcohol should dry them out, not preserve them. Chemically, alcohols (a broad chemical category) are a universal solvent: they dissolve both polar (water) and nonpolar (oil) compounds. It might clean them, but you're removing the oils from the rubber.

I purchased the PIAA silicone blades from Amazon. They are quiet and do a great job. I’ve always used 000 steel wool to clean/polish my windshields before treating them with RainX. The PIAA blades come with a pre-treatment that you apply to the windshield and buff off. After you install the blades, you run them dry for 3-5 minutes to break them in. I haven’t had to do anything else to them in two years.

The thread about refreshing the stored gasoline jogged my memory...

I’m still on the same pair of PIAA silicone wiper blades that I purchased back in October of 2016. That’s probably longer than some of you keep a vehicle. Those blades still work great and with any luck may make through 2020.
