Just saw a report on Channel 2 Tulsa, vet's claim of deployment to the Middle East and subsequent injuries and disability, may be false. There is a recording from an officer who states he was never so deployed and when he was taken to the airport following discharge he walked into the terminal.

We as The Barracks want everyone to know that we fully support our veterans and disabled veterans, as well as our public service people in our community. With that said, there was an incident with a person claiming to be a disabled Afghanistan veteran that has gone viral on social media that we feel needs explaining since the video taken by a bystander was incomplete and misleading. Last night the Muskogee Police Department invited members of the Barracks, VFW, American Legion, DAV, Clergy, and VSO’s for a briefing on the situation and to listen to advice from this group of people. The following explains what caused the incident and how it was handled.

The individual in question was purchasing alcohol through the self-check-out section of Walmart in Muskogee. As most people know, when using this method to check items, a cashier is required to check the alcohol. The cashier asks the person in question for his I.D. where he refused and became extremely verbally abusive with Walmart personnel. After an extended amount of time of this harassment, a manager called the police. You could hear him yelling in the background of the 911 call while the manager was on the phone with the dispatcher. When the police arrived, they attempted to de-escalate the situation, for 15 minutes. They politely asked the person for his I.D. since they were investigating a possible disturbance, an action authorized by law. He refused and continued to be non-cooperative. He had the opportunity to leave before the police came but chose not to. After more time of him not cooperating, the police felt they had no choice but to place the individual under arrest. When they asked him to extend his arm, he refused. The police warned him they would use pepper spray if he didn’t submit. He once again refused and they used a one-second burst of the spray. At that point, the police attempted to put his hands behind his back and instead of following instructions, he became physically combative. Once they got him on the ground, he was arrested and taken to the hospital for evaluation and confirmation of his disability claim. It should be noted that a day or two after being admitted, he was discharged.

As far as his claim of being a disabled veteran goes, here are the facts. First of all, unless the word "paralyzed" means something different in Muskogee, he is NOT paralyzed. In the video of the incident, it clearly shows him getting out of his car unassisted, standing completely up, and moving to the motorized chair like any of us would which was about 8 feet from him, no limping, no crawling, no assistance. He had NOT served in a combat zone, making his service-related claim a lie. We do not support any Veteran who lies or exaggerates their Veteran status for their personal gain. It is disrespectful to our Brothers and Sisters who have given the ultimate sacrifice to allow any Veteran to claim they have served in combat.

The Barracks (and our brother Veterans’ support organizations) primary mandate is to assist and support all veterans in need. However, when a former military member attempts to use their status in order to benefit themselves or get out of trouble with the law, we will be the first to condemn such actions as it makes ALL veterans look bad in the eyes of the public. We are a great community and we must stop bashing our Police force before hearing or seeing ALL the facts. If a Veteran is being abused in any way, we will be the first ones to respond and demand justice, this was not the case in this scenario. Do better next time Muskogee. How this situation was handled on social media was an embarrassment not only to our community but also our fellow Veterans living here. Stop spreading hate and get the facts first before judging anyone, we all deserve better. Let’s move forward and never let another situation like this tear our great city apart, we are better than this.

Victor Lezama,
Founder and Director, The Barracks

The above is a statement from a veterans support group in Muskogee.

This provides a complete explanation of the events. Law enforcement officers, and store employees are certainly capable of doing the wrong thing, but that is not what happened in this case.

There is never justification for an individual to act in this manner.

This is another lesson for me to not jump to conclusions without checking the facts. You'd think I would have learned by now.

Aaaaaaand it looks like my early skepticism of his claims of disability and injury were fairly smart.

Lookin' for a payday.
And he may lose that 100% VA disability as the VA can recheck him and take it away or reduce it. They could even go after him for fraud which they have done in other cases. He screwed up letting this get this much public attention.
