My only advice would be to steer the burglar towards a room with floors you were going to replace anyways. The last burglar we had ruined a brand new hardwood floor I had just installed. I never realized how much blood a human contained until I had to mop one up (no, the cops don't help you do that, you're on your own).

Our dog will wake us up and wife will call 911. I will have my Mossy 500 12 ga 18.5" bbl loaded with 00 buck and heavy birdshot. Also have a 9mm or 45 pistol close by.

Grab my loaded 9mm pistol and surefire off the nightstand.Wife sleeps on the other side of the house. Headoff the intruder in the middle of the house.

"Interesting" that 98% do not mention having and using a light.
Dale, I'm far from any kind of professional but in most of the "plans" above folks are defending their position and most of those that are mentioned the "summitch" will be backlit or silhouetted. If you are shining a light you're giving your position. Now, if it's total darkness or if I'm taking the fight to the sommitch, I'd want a light. This is purely the opinion of me!

@swampratt I assume a BUG = Back Up Gun. Now is that an extry gun or one that talks a summitch into backing up? Lol

Ya’ll messing around with birdshot...that’s a big “maybe”. I agree that Birdshot will not spread that much at much at 15- 20 feet, and the only way to know really, is to pattern your gun. The issue with birdshot is the tiny pellets just don’t weigh much; and they won’t penetrate much either. If the bad guy has a coat on, it may just piss him off. Oh sure, he might bleed to death, later, as was described above, but he might have been able to get some rounds off too, before he moved on to hell. If you are shooting to stop the threat, you are much better off launching a few heavier pellets at him, the number and size you need begins with #4 buck and up. Anything less is not enough. It just isn’t. If you want to stop the fight, use a load that will do just that. I have 00 in mine right now, the Remington Low Recoil stuff. As soon as I find some #4 that suits my needs, I’ll switch to that. You can chart out the ballistics of various loads pretty easily, as also previously mentioned just using some old sheets of newspaper.

1. Rifle or shotgun? Pump or Auto? Caliber or Gauge?
2. What do you have it loaded with?
3. What condition is it in?
4. Do you have a BUG? What is it, what’s in it, and it’s condition too please.
...

1. I reach for the S&W model 67 .38 on the nightstand, and the light and phone and electronic ear Pro beside it.
2. 125gr hollowpoints
3. Loaded D/A

This gun is only there to provide defense while my wife and I move from the bed through the bathroom into the closet. I give my wife the phone and tell her to call 911. We get to the closet and I hand her the revolver and pickup the Winchester model 1300 20ga loaded with 00 buckshot. The rest of the box of shells and a box of 3/4oz 1600fps slugs is there beside it.
I put the ears on and turn them all the way up, allowing me to hear every footstep my dog takes, so I will probably hear whoever is in the house. We have a smell good warmer with a light just outside the door of our room, so we’ll know when they turn that corner, looking in the dresser mirror. When they turn the next corner into the doorway of the bathroom, they are sidelit/silhouetted by the motion light on the back porch that they triggered just before they broke the glass. I am now about 22 feet from them and all they should see is a black hole, followed by a bright flash.
My family and friends all know that if you come to my house in the evening, especially after dark, I will answer the door armed. A couple of my neighbors have learned this as well, one of them chasing a young colt that got out last summer at about 11:00 when I was up late working. He was very appreciative that I helped him catch her, after he got over the slight scare.

I may have told this here before...but anyway - an older lady i worked with handled a home invasion well. Jane was in her mid/late 60's, was 6'2" and hard as nails. she was in her back bedroom reading while her husband and his brother were bs'ing in the living room. the brother left and a few moments later there was a commotion at the front door, she heard the crack of a 22 and instantly got out of bed and grabbed her 380, got on the side away from the door of a dresser near the bedroom door. there was a mirror at the end of the hall and she could see the little gangsta creeping down the hall. as soon as he entered her bedroom she shot him in the neck, it put him down but didn't kill or put him out of the fight. the husband recovered enough from being gut shot with a 22 rifle to get his 38 and came down the hall, he finished the little gangsta off.

on the news that night they were interviewing neighbors and this young black fellow said, "they picked the wrong house to mess wif, they gots all kinds of guns in that house." yep, wrong house, and never pick on a grey haired older woman, who used to be a redhead, and still sat in deer stands during the season. LOL

Tell wife call 911 while grabbing a S&W Sigma in 40 S&W positioning behind a big steel gun safe that gives me a view to hallway for cover and not allowing anyone down the hall towards my bedroom until identified LE arrives. Loaded with Rem 155 HP factory ammo. 2 extra mags on exterior side of safe if needed. Wife retrieves a Ruger Police Service-Six DAO in 357 mag loaded with 140 FTX Hornady and informs 911 our location.
