Oh, and a while back my dad bought a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 that has a social security number scratched onto the side of the action. It's faint, but readable.

What if the social security number was from someone famous?

Then you have the task of trying to prove that the famous person actually owned it.

I’ve seen many lever guns with SS numbers on them. That big flat receiver is just begging for an engraving tool to tear into it!
I have a beautiful Remington BDL from 1972. It had a SS number on the side of the receiver. I took some 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and worked it over wet for hours. Took a little cold blue and touched it up. Looks pretty good.

During the 70’s putting ones SS # on everything was normal and seemed to be a fad among some.
Danged near every horse trailer from that era had the owners SS on in the side or rear along with their name.
I still see some of those rusted relics around the area where I live.

Here, but occasionally There.
Back when I drove 18-wheelers, my dad and I put our SS#'s on the inside case of our CB radios for our trucks. His got stolen one day and we reported it to the police in Amarillo. A few weeks later, I get a call from the PD to come see if any of 3 or 4 radios was dads. Immediately saw the radio and pulled out my phillips head screwdriver and took off the cover. Sure enough, there was Dad's SS#.

The police told me then that the guy they caught claimed to "work on radios," which was why he had so many in his trunk. They also said that our having the radio marked was the ONLY evidence they had with which they could charge the guy with theft.
