Good advice to leave the spring system in a carry gun (duty or self defense) factory. This especially applies to the compact or smaller sized Glocks (19, 23, 30 etc) I have found aftermarket combinations in them that are unreliable.

You were right about me not charging. The problem would have to be really serious before I mentioned money. Even then, it would be to replace what’s broke, not me helping. Thanks for the meal.

Good stuff has happened here; shows how we can help each other out. I still advocate a new recoil spring when one gets a used gun; springs are cheap and it's just good insurance.

Agree about the good stuff happening. Fyrtwuck took the whole thing apart to check it out, not just down to the normal cleaning stage. He was showing me stuff that spooked me pretty good. Pretty sure I won't be breaking any Glocks down that far...

...at least, not for a while. Probably will get a new spring, but Fyrtwuck's examination simply means it won't be right away. Otherwise, I was going to get a new one before I even fired this thing.

Yep, especially if this gun is a self defense gun of any sort. You always want to have a backup for the reasons the thread was started at the very least.

To elaborate on this thing about getting a new recoil spring: Because it's a used gun one doesn't really know what the round count is. I would get a new Glock Factory spring for the pistol regardless. That's the only way you will be able to say for sure what the "mileage" is on the pistol. Replacing a recoil spring on a gun you might carry or use as a defensive pistol is just good preventive maintenance. Recoil springs DO wear out...how many more rounds will this gun have before it does? My Ouija Board says "Nobody really knows".

Recoil springs are cheap. They also establish a baseline from which to go forward.

When I checked out the gun, it looked new. I’d say less than fifty rounds. A used Glock will have what we call “smileys” on the barrel. They are caused by the tilt barrel design and the slide rubbing the top of the barrel during recoil. This one hadn’t even formed a grin yet. Nothing needed to be replaced. It’s all good and range ready.

Ha!!!

Maybe I need to meet up with druryj and let him shoot it first?

No, seriously, I will likely be buying a new spring assembly anyway. And, since I probably have fired more rounds through my other Glock, I'll likely get a new one for it as well.

Glock has a lot of parts that interchange from one model to the other. Check the numbers in the Glock manual to see if they match. If they do, you could have a backup spring for either gun.

I have a Gen-1 17 that I bought used in 1988. It went through the six part upgrade in 1989 IIRC. Still has the same parts in it and still running.
