I'm putting together my first AR. It is a 16" midlength with a Criterion barrel and YHM fixed gas block. I have been reading forums and people are all over the place on which buffer, weights/springs to run. I'm considering the Vltor a5 or Springco Green with H2. Anyone have a preference or recommendation for a smooth shooting, reliable setup?

Depends on what buffer tube and stock you run. Stop reading the internet and put in it what colt and other reputable manufactures do/did.

Should have gotten adjustable gas; they are cheap enough now it's a no brainer; but it's not the end of the world. A standard carbine spring and an H2 is pretty tried and true. I have a 16" middy that runs that with no problem whether it's 69gr BTHP, Norma FMJ or Wolf Gold.

If you go A5 you can run an A5H1 or H2 without issue. Be cognizant that if you go A5, you will need an A5 spec'd extension and spring as well.

Ill be honest, on the 223/5.56 I really don't think it matters much. That's just my opinion which isn't worth much.
