Chaco canyon

I did a little research and both Big Bend and Chaco Canyon were listed as among the top spots in the USA for viewing the night sky. So I'll check out accommodations next and we'll go do it. Oh, and yeah, they say go during the New Moon for maximum darkness.

Here, but occasionally There.
The best star show I've ever experienced was at Philmont Scout Ranch in 1995 during the last night of a backpacking trip. I was an adult adviser to a group from our troop that included my son and 6 other Scouts. The backcountry and mountains are natural dark sky country and I think the part that made a difference was the elevation because there is less atmosphere to interfere with the viewing. In my example, we were camped at about 8000' ASL. Another factor for success is a new moon. Friends in the Tulsa Astronomy group say Black Mesa in the panhandle is a great place.

I have heard lots of good things about Black Mesa, but it's a long hike to the top.

With regards to Black Mesa, one can find a motel in Boise City (the closest town to have one) or camp out in Carl Etling State Park. If one could get introduced to the right local near Kenton (the nearest community to Black Mesa), there is a road going up on top of the mesa. As for me, I did a few climbs of that mesa, but I was in my teens at the time.

Sorry, I don't know the "right" local.

I forgot exactly where, but there is an observatory down in SW Texas. If I remember correctly, it’s not to far from the Big Bend area. Alpine, Ft. Davis, Ft. Stockton and Marfa have all changed quite a bit, but that area is still one of my favorite places on this big blue rock.

Agree. We elk hunt that area. I’ve never seen so many stars at one time in the clear sky’s.
As Okie4570 said, watch for the dark moon phase.

Most any area in North Korea. Not really a vacation spot however.

Yeah. Could you send me a link? Wonder if they have cool glamping places you can rent there? You know, nice king beds; a hot tub, fridges stocked with drinks and snacks. Maybe a spa adjacent to the site and of course, quality restaurants. Wife doesn’t do rough country camping, you know tents and bags and Colman lanterns and so on. She’s all about luxury accommodations.
