Looking for an older truck that belonged to a family member. I have the vin#. If it's still out there somewhere, I'm interested in trying to buy it. Who can find this info for me?

If it's in Oklahoma, the OK Tax Commission would be the ones who'd know its last owner, but I don't know what it'd take to get that info from them. If it's a car of particular interest, see if there's an owner's club; they can sometimes help in locating particular cars.

OTC doesn't or didn't give that info out, I guess that could have changed. I run across folks looking for early broncos that they'd sold decades ago or family members sold decades ago and it's pretty much dead end after dead end. If it's a collector type, there's a Facebook page for every interest and style of vehicle out there to search on.

Wouldn't a CarFax or a similar type of vehicle report contain some useful information? It seems like I remember seeing registration records insurance records, etc. May not provide names but at least location may help narrow more detailed search methods. Maybe someone else more familiar with these reports could verify as I have had minimal experience with these reports.

Those are only good if someone "submits" information on a vehicle. For instance, if "Joe's Garage" does body work on my vehicle and doesn't report it on Carfax, nothing shows up.

Personally, I figure that Carfax is about useless as a research tool. Kind of like the Better Business Bureau.

If you aren't friends with a LEO willing to run it for you, go to a tag office and tell them you want to find the owner. They will give you a piece of paper, you fill it out and pay them, and they will give you a printout with all of the info. If it is not in OK, they may be able to tell you where it is. Use the tag office and see where that leads you. If you have any issues with that get ahold of someone that does title 42s. Carfax will tell you which state it is titled in and recent registration activity, but no personal info; not the right tool in this case.
