I forgot to ask - when are you going?

Not sure if we will even get over to Oregon. It will depend on what the family wants to do. Right now, it is just a thought on the part of my wife and myself. When we lived in Oregon, we had planned to get up there in 2018, but we moved to Utah before getting there. Our trip to Idaho, and possibly to the Gorge, would be in late May and early June, back in Oklahoma in time to prepare for our new gig beginning the first of July.

Lived in Or and Wa for over 40 years. The above posters are spot on. The only thing I might add is stay away, far away from Portland and Seattle.

Oh, yeah!!!!! Way too many liberals and other nuts in Portland. We'll only hit Washington if we decide to go out on one side of the river and come back on the other.

Hey Terry , What's the new gig?

Driving for a company out of Broken Arrow. Using full-sized Ford Transit equipped with cameras, sensors, lasers, and computers that "collect" data of the roadways. The company contracts with the DOT's of various states to drive the roads to record onto hard drives the images and other data from sensors and lasers. That information is probably used by the states to determine what sections of roadway needs work.

Could be out of state for anywhere from 3 months to 6 months, or perhaps longer. Don't know all the details yet, so some of what I'm mentioning here is speculative.

The beauty of it is that we get to see new country and get paid at the same time. I will appreciate the "scouting" we can do for trips back later when we quit working again. The money we make is ALL gravy because we can still live on our pensions and use the working money to pay off the last of our debts.

We work as a team with me driving and the wife monitoring and operating the computers.

Follow-up. I'm also interested in places in Northern Idaho for any of you that are familiar with that area.

While our relatives have lived in Idaho for about 20 years or so, I'm not sure that they have gotten out and seen a lot of their state. When we were up there a few years ago, the women were doing sewing and embroidery work, so the wife's cousin and I went out to see some of Idaho's sights. After getting to some of them, he made the comment that it was good we were there as he hadn't even seen some of those places himself, in spite of being there 20 years. And, most of those places were in the southern part of the state.

More central Idaho but we have drive the roads between Sun Valley and Salmon, ID several times and is one of the pretties areas you will ever drive through. THe route encompasses Hwy 75 & 93. The far North end is Salmon which is about 45 minutes South of the Idaho/Montana border. Salmon is an awesome little town in a beautiful area. Further South about half way between Salmon and Sun Valley is Stanley, Idaho. It is a small town but stunning views and an outdoorsmans paradise.

Dennis,

If you get up that way, try to go down the Oregon coastline. Lots of beautiful places along Highway 101 out there. For a preview, check out my Smugmug site for Oregon and pictures of the coast.

We have been all over British Columbia and the Islands west of the mainland, just never got into Oregon. We are looking forward to it.

If you are avoiding the west side and don't want a 5 hr drive down the gorge to the falls, from ID Falls E to Swan Valley, N to Victor then east to Jackson is some the most amazing topography I've encountered in North America. Then you're in a position to check out Jackson and the valley to the N, then loop S to Alpine and back to ID Falls. Depending on the rate of travel probably a pretty good day. Stopping will be the time killer. The Tetons rise from around 6400 ft in the valley to over 13K in what seems like 10 miles. It's quite impressive.

Twin Falls is kind of neat stop, the drive off the highway does nothing for the actual falls. Some decent food and hotels in the area too. From Twin Falls N to Craters of the Moon, then over to ID falls for the trip to Jackson.

Ought to be able to kill a few days pretty easily.

Another thing to remember is the limit I believe is 80 in the open areas, of which there are a lot, so the miles tick off pretty rapidly.
