It's to keep the illegal aliens and other scofflaws from buying cars with 11,10,8 months left on the tabs and then never registering them in their name or buying insurance. No tags makes it harder to drive. I've seen plenty of used car listings on Craigslist where they'll state new tabs or how many months are left on the current registration.

I sold a car with 6+ months left on the tag. The girl who bought it blew through a bunch of toll gates and I got the damn bill! I contested it and didn't have to pay but I was pretty much guilty until proven innocent.

I think this is a great idea. If people can't afford the tag or insurance they have no business on the road.

While we're at it, I wonder if bald tires and no inspections are why every single time it rains I see cars hit the cable barriers on HWY 412

Keep the tag!

It protects you.

I gave an old beater to a friend of a friend,,,
All I asked was that he go to the tag agency soon.

The jerk never did and simply abandoned the car when the registration ran out,,,
Trouble is, he abandoned it on a city street and it ran up several hundred dollars in parking tickets.

Eventually they came after me for the back fines,,,
Fortunately I had a receipt he signed taking delivery of the car.

I got out of the fines but still had to pay to have the car towed away.

Either do the deal at the tag agency,,,
Or get a signed receipt and keep the tags.

Also weird Oklahoma/tag stuff is the fact you don't have to tag a trailer in Oklahoma. I don't have any data but I'd be pretty sure Oklahoma and any other state with this same deal have the highest trailer thefts.

You do if you pull it behind a vehicle with a commercial tag. My enclosed trailer is titled and tagged.

That makes sense. Just imagine how many non commercial trailers are goin down the road.
I will also add that anyone can tag their trailer in Oklahoma if they feel the need. My dad used to travel to Tx a bunch and he tagged his trailer so the Tx law would quit pullin him over for no tag.

I remember when they required you to post your social security number on your trailer...……….

Auto titles now have a form you can use to show that you sold the car. IIRC it is a $10 fee to file it.

^^This. The form is at the bottom of every Oklahoma title and the car’s VIN is preprinted on it. Just tear it off at the perforations, fill out the info of who you sold the vehicle to, and take it to any tag agent to be filed instantly with the OTC. You don’t even have to have the purchaser sign the form. Cost is $10, but it will save you lots of grief in dealing with PikePass when the new owner of your vehicle starts blowing through the PikePass lanes.
