Background checks, but not for the reason you think.

So, my kid has a field trip coming up. It's for Mustang Public Schools. I don't think the school, grade, or specific destination are important for the topic. We got a note coming home saying that whether you intend to sponsor or just attend as parents, you have to complete a mandatory background check. Even though no parent is allowed on the bus, and we would be driving separately far into the OKC area, every parent has to pass a background check to be allowed into a very public place (i.e. a museum). Not only is it a ridiculously in-depth background check, with employment and SSN, each person has to pay $12 for the screening, to get to go to a place that's free with the school, or is $7 any other day. I couldn't get an answer on how long the check was good for (is it $24 for us for every future field trip or is it a one-time fee?). I have half a mind to take him to the field trip destination the Saturday before to spend a full day there without the screening, and just keep him home that day and spend the full school day at the Sam Noble museum in Norman.
I welcome any and all thoughts and comments.

P.S.
I have no problem with the theory of the background check, I just think the school should foot the bill, especially since they are including any and all of the "volunteers" they so desperately beg for.

I have included the link, which seems to be an overall "volunteer background check" for MPS, and screenshots of the home page for people that don't like to click links.

I filled one of those out as well for a trip to Dallas next month. I want to say the background checks are good for 1 year, but I could be wrong. As sponsors (parents) going on the trip we had to pay the same amount as the kids, but they decreased our cost to offset the cost of the background check.

If you are not riding on the bus there is no need to pay for a background check, especially if the place is open to the public anyway IMHO. Unless they are requiring all the staff at the museum as well as other members of the public to go through the check it's about as worthless as nipples on a boar anyway.

I would go with the plan you have of going the day before for a reduced cost and send a reminder to the school that unless their checks cover all the museum staff or anyone who will happen to be there (could include other schools without the check requirements of parents as well as members of the public) they are only forcing you to incur a financial burden with little to no gain.

Then again I was not big on anything while in school either. Never went to homecoming and didn't want to go to the prom which ended up being me sitting in a bar playing cards anyway. So what i would do may not end up being the best way to deal with it all.

"ONCE UPON A TIME"
only massed produced memographed permission slips were needed..
Mustang, needs to change it's name to "Old beaten plug" A Mustang is wild and free which the town is NOT..
I'd do your notion and go the day before and it would be awesome if MANY others did the same, but that's too much to expect from a town of sheep..

A background check only looks at stuff that is available anyway. If something should happen to a child on the trip, the lawyer for the poor aggrieved family will check everyone associated with the trip, and finding that one parent did not have the prescribed check, will sue the school system for everything they can possibly get. Which means that your taxes will increase far beyond the $12. Just go and have a good time with your kids and make memories that they will have long after you are gone.
