My regular propane grill is just finally burned out after 9 years or so of heavy use. Was looking at replacements... I think after this thread I am sold on the griddle concept. At least a grill/griddle convertible.

More versatile so I can cook more outside. Looks easier to clean than open grates. Still can do my steaks and chicken on it just fine.

They make cast-iron griddles that set across two kitchen stove burners (or elements, on electric stoves).

Is there any reason one of these wouldn't work on a regular outdoor grill?

You'd want to rig something up to get it at the right height I would think. On top of the regular grate would be too far away...and setting it on top of the tubes too close IMO.
If you get that figured out, I suppose it would...

I have one, and was tempted to use it tonight since it was too windy/cold to fire up the blackstone. Ours is non stick cast aluminum, and works really good on our flat top electric stove. It does wiggle around some, so you have to hold it with one hand while working the food on the grill with the other that makes it a little inconvenient.
My parents had an old Maytag gas stove that came with a griddle attachment. By design it fit down into the burners to make it steady.
3/8" thick cast iron with a grease trap around the edges. My sister and I were tasked with cooking breakfast after Sunday church all the years we were living at home. Perfect for pancakes, eggs, etc.

Made two steaks on it last weekend...one on the griddle and one on the grill top accessory. Grill top definately made it better but I do wish it had a lid to get the heat I like for the steaks.

This weekend was fried rice with shrimp and scallops. Good grief this is good stuff.
