Is the plastic case my new S&W 610 came in suitable for the locking container TSA requires guns to be in or will I have to get a special 'TSA-approved' box for my planned flight to Seattle this summer?

Thanks.

I have a friend that recently took a flight, she just used her factory plastic box with a WalMart lock on it. does your box have a hole for a padlock to go through?

Yes the plastic box the gun came in is acceptable as long as it’s Lockable. I fly with pistols in my checked luggage. Use a TSA approved lock and you must be the only person with the key to open it.

Firearms
When traveling, comply with the laws concerning possession of firearms as they vary by local, state and international governments.

If you are traveling internationally with a firearm in checked baggage, please check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for information and requirements prior to travel.

Declare each firearm each time you present it for transport as checked baggage. Ask your airline about limitations or fees that may apply.

Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. As defined by 49 CFR 1540.5 a loaded firearm has a live round of ammunition, or any component thereof, in the chamber or cylinder or in a magazine inserted in the firearm.

Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock unless TSA personnel request the key to open the firearm container to ensure compliance with TSA regulations. You may use any brand or type of lock to secure your firearm case, including TSA-recognized locks.
Firearm parts, including magazines, clips, bolts and firing pins, are prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.

Replica firearms, including firearm replicas that are toys, may be transported in checked baggage only.

Rifle scopes are permitted in carry-on and checked baggage.

Ammunition
Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.

Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).

Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm.

Id get a used pelican case on Ebay with a series 5200 Master lock (or two). The baggage handlers will be much less likely to steal it. They will want to quickly get in it and discard the case. So if its much harder to get into...…

Its not foolproof, but thieves want the easy score

I bought a small Pelican Case for a handgun when flying, it has two locking houses, one on each side. Holds the pistol, spare mags, and a 50 box of ammo; securely. But as long as you can lock the hard plastic case the gun came in, and many are that way now, it's okay.

So the lock on the bag can be a TSA lock. The pistol case should not be one of the locks that are TSA mastered. You can buy the master keys btw. I'd an airport gives you grief make sure you have a printed copy of the regs right with your pistol case. I think Atlanta had some issues where they just cut locks when a firearm is involved though they should not be.
