So the lock on the bag can be a TSA lock. The pistol case should not be one of the locks that are TSA mastered. You can buy the master keys btw. I'd an airport gives you grief make sure you have a printed copy of the regs right with your pistol case. I think Atlanta had some issues where they just cut locks when a firearm is involved though they should not be.

That's why I use TSA approved locks.

I believe the TSA approved locks are all master keyed. Fine for the bag but not the pistol case.

^^

Regardless of what the TSA website says, this is what 49 CFR § 1540.111 - Carriage of weapons, explosives, and incendiaries by individuals says:

(c)In checked baggage. A passenger may not transport or offer for transport in checked baggage or in baggage carried in an inaccessible cargohold under § 1562.23 of this chapter:

(1) Any loaded firearm(s).

(2) Any unloaded firearm(s) unless -

(i) The passenger declares to the aircraft operator, either orally or in writing, before checking the baggage, that the passenger has a firearm in his or her bag and that it is unloaded;

(ii) The firearm is unloaded;

(iii) The firearm is carried in a hard-sided container; and

(iv) The container in which it is carried is locked, and only the passenger retains the key or combination.

Can't have it both ways with TSA master-keyed locks.

I'm flying to Denver next week and of course, taking a handgun with me. I'll report back after. I know how to do this, what I don't yet know is which to take? Oh decisions decisions! Sig M11 A1? Glock 43X? Walther PPS M2? S&W 340 PD? ... All of the above? :scratch:

According to regulations, your gun case can be integrated with a lock or you can use a case with a separate lock. Do not use TSA approved locks for your gun case. TSA approved locks compromise the security of your firearm. Remember, the law states that you ALONE maintain possession of the keys to your gun case.
