That s a messed up deal.
Friend got rear ended and she is now out of transportation and has been for a week.
Seems the OKC police use money from general fund to take care of things like that and do not have auto insurance.
Maybe she has not talked to the right person.
No rental car from them.
Anyone have experience in this situation?

She e mailed me yesterday and said they finally got to step one ..which I suppose is sending someone out to look at her car. Not sure on that though.

When she called OKC police department the person that answered the phone said what department do you want me to transfer you too...No idea really.
Person on the phone had no idea ...or did they???

They are self insured. They carry a piece of paper in the vehicle in lieu of proof of insurance with all the info on who to contact, etc.

She was getting on the highway at the I35 240 area during rush hour and was stopped and the officer thought she had went and rear ended her.
She had just picked up a couple stray dogs and was taking them to the animal shelter no good deed goes unpunished.

Yea she did not get the information she needed I would guess.
Good thing is she only got a concussion and was dizzy for a couple days.
No broken things..Frame not bent on her car..Unibody.
New rear quarter panel, trunk lid and bumper and tail light would put it back on the road.
Kind of a rear quarter driver side hit.

I have fixed worse.

What year and model of car? Is the floor under the trunk bent or bowed? Any absorbers or rebar under the bumper cover crushed? Some of that stuff can get pricey fast.

As noted the cities self insure. Anyone in Oklahoma can self insure with proof of sufficient liquid assets, even individuals, but the required cash is stupid high. Usually it's only cities and counties and state entities and the tribes and large companies (like Quiktrip for example self insured last I knew, and my employer a large insurance company also self insures).

Anyway... They should have a risk management department that handls it. The city, not necessarily the PD. If it drags out much longer I'd go through my own policy as recommended and have my company square up with them later.

Ford Taurus with liability only, around a 2002 year.
You should have seen it after her brother hit a tree with it. I fixed that.
Strut tower was bent in and a chain and my car pulled it all back out. Then some bottle jack and creative thinking and a fender and hood it was looking quite nice.
Had to replace cooling tank and remove oil pan and beat dents out of it and weld up 1 hole in the oil pan.

Poor car has seen better days.
3.0V6 and runs excellent.. well after I removed the catalyst that was all broken up and clogging the exhaust system..
Seems when you ramp a car up a steel fence at 60 MPH and pound into a huge tree stuff gets shook loose :) I can fix it.

I'm sure you could fix it.

But I'd bet real money it's totaled. Using market rates for parts and labor and paint, no one is fixing a 17 year Taurus with damage into the rear quarter. They're gonna write a check for like 2 grand and walk away.

The contact should be with the city, not the police department.

She does have a copy of their self insurance form, right?

They will be slow, but if it was the officer's fault they will make good on the claim.

First make sure the correct agency did an accident report. There is an unwritten jurisdictional rule between OCPD and OHP. IIRC, getting ON the interstate, OHP should be working the accident. Getting OFF the interstate should be OCPD. Weird I know.

Okc Risk Management. 405-297-3891

Oklahoma City Action Center 405-297-2535
When a person calls in a complaint to the Action Center, the agency involved has 48 hours to respond to the complaint. If not, the department head has to answer why the situation was not addressed and what action is or has been taken or it gets sent to the city council. I’ve had to work several of these complaints and every time I got one, I was told it was the next item on my list of things to do that day and if I didn’t, I better have a good explanation.

I may have some more information later. I reached out to an old OCPD buddy of mine and got his voicemail.
