The wife and I are headed out to Westcliffe, CO tomorrow for 5 days to do some serious stargazing. Westcliffe is one of only nine Certified Dark Sky Communities in the world. There is a 14" astronomical telescope there and we have booked a private "Star Party" event there for tomorrow night for a couple of hours. Then on Friday night, June 7, there is a public star party, again centered around the telescope area. We have rented a cabin about 8 miles north of town up in the mountains, it ought to be a fun time. We fly into Denver in the morning then reserved a mid-size SUV for the 3 hour drive to Westcliffe. I'll post pics and impressions when we get back.

Yes definitely give us a report. I'd love to do something like that!

Awesome to know there’s another amateur astronomer here!

I bought a 12” Dobsonian reflector in April and my wife and I had planned to go to Black Mesa this past weekend during the current new moon. Clouds and storms ended up making us have to cancel unfortunately. Black Mesa is a Bortle 1 sky...dark enough for the stars themselves to actually cast shadows.

I had a business trip last fall to Gunnison and the skies at those altitudes when you are away from city lights is absolutely breathtaking.

Some of the best stargazing I've ever encountered was in or around;
Telluride, Co.
Cortez, Co.
North of Flagstaff, Az.
4-Corners Area...Monument Valley-Utah & Arizona area.
Shiprock, New Mexico...especially on the road..Hgwy 64 from Shiprock to Teec Nos Pos,Az.
Vegas....the desert area North East-I-15 to I-93 to Alamo and on up to Crystal Springs...any and all the side jeep trails.
Vegas...the desert area North West I-95 past Cactus Springs to the trail to Camp Desert Rock and North.

Never owned a telescope. Just a small camp fire, folding chair, tin cup and a bottle of Jack Single Barrel. Gazing up at the stars that the Early Man, Anasazi, Spanish Explorers Francisco Vásquez de Coronado and Juan de Oñate along with their soldiers, Indian Tribes, Cowboys, Early Mormons and Settlers looked upon along with many others. The mind wonders on our Universe out in the desert or mountains at night.

***Please send a report and pictures!!!

Tonopah, Nevada.....about 200 miles NW of Vegas on I-95.
