I've got a 686 with that grip. It feels 100% secure when ya take hold of it. Once upon a time I found a set of wood grips for my 686 but I quickly went back to the hogue. It's a using gun for me so looks come second.
I believe this gun came this way, I like how secure it feels as well. It will be a good shooter

What’s the story on that one? A sample gun to show how it works?

Correct. It is known as “cutaway”. Samples exist from at least 30 years back that have been used by manufacturer reps, in armor classes, shows, and gun stores. I’ve handled a few over the years but never had the opportunity to purchase one until now.

Somewhere around here a fella has a thread called skeletonize everything in which he's building a super light AR. You may have bought his handgun.
