Hey All...

As you know by now my knowledge and experience with the M1 Garand is lacking. At this point I may not purchase one...but if I go through with it, here's more questions.

Yes I know this is a rifle discussion area but it's part "2" on a rifle.

M1 Garand Ammo: What the Heck??!!

So...can I purchase plain jane ammo for the Garand? Nothing HOT...Winchester White Box...Federal..etc. OR...do I have to...must purchase specific M1 Garand ammo.

Of course no reloads....but what's wrong with common 30-06, ammo? Again...nothing hot, no big game rounds or long range shooting.

Of course I don't want to hurt or ruin the action, springs,or any other parts.

Little help please??!!

Thanks.

Only use commercial or handloaded ammo loaded to M2 ball specs or you'll risk bending an op rod. Some will say that Remington 150 gr Core Lokt is Garand safe, but I still avoid it. You can also get an adjustable gas plug that will allow you to use loads other than M2. I personally just stick to Greek HXP though.

Common commercial .30-06 hunting ammo is loaded to higher pressure than the M2 ammo. But more importantly the pressure curve with newer powders can be bad on the old warhorse as the gas system was designed for a specific powder. There are several modern M1 Garand specific loads out there now. If you want to roll your own IMR-4895 or H4895 are THE powders to use, just keep it in the right charge weights. Oddly the same applies to the M14/M1A.

I load both imr and h 4895. Got best results with imr.
49 gr of imr 4895 under a 150 boolit is supposed to duplicate ball ammo.

You can also just buy an aftermarket gas plug, which will allow you to shoot modern spec ammo in it. Should be less than 40$...
