It was a big deal at my house. My dad was on a team for Westinghouse when they were competing for the contract to develop the video communication stuff that was going to be used. They didn't get it and I seem to recall my dad wasn't too upset. He was a bit concerned about being one of the design team of something if it failed!!

One the day of the Moon Walk, we had a HUGE thunderstorm come through (Maryland) and knock out power to the whole neighborhood. Our little street was without power for hours. Finally, we loaded into the car and drove to my aunt and uncles and we all watched it on a small black and white in the den. Got to stay up late that night!!

I also remember getting to stay up late. I'm glad that my parents understood how much this event meant to me! Also had the B&W TV.

I was 16. We had (IIRC) our first color TV--a 1968 Zenith round tube TV made in the USA (Dad wouldn't have it any other way!) It was late and my parents were asleep (or Dad on at work as a policeman in town) so I watched it on WFIL-TV 6, the Philadelphia ABC affiliate, while listening to the audio with headphones by tuning the stereo system to the bottom of the FM dial (people from Tilsa probably remember doing this with KOTV-6.) I preferred to watch ABC as they had Jules Bergman--while Walter Cronkite was everyone's uncle, Jules Bergman had gone through the astronaut training so he could give more detailed reporting on America's space program. Those memories linger, fifty years on...

Looking through some old pictures today and found these 3 unused 10 cent air mail stamps.
U.S. postage stamps issued in 1969 to celebrate man's first visit to the moon. The stamps feature Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon as he stepped off the stairs of the moon landing vehicle. The Earth is visible in the background.

I seem to remember that it was this stamp was on some envelopes that the North Vietnamese passed out to POWs at the Hanoi Hilton. They were empty and the VCs were trying to use the empty envelopes to get the POWs to give up information.
