I had an online exchange with someone who had that happen. He said there's some kind of radiator on the side that will sometimes get chaff built up in it. That buildup will occasionally get hot enough to ignite, and, in their infinite wisdom, John Deere put it right over a plastic fuel tank...

Sounds like the hydraulic cooler. But those things throw so much crap in the air that if the wind blows right everything gets crud in it.

That's the problem with designing equipment. Everything has to fit somewhere, and the design engineers rarely use the equipment being designed.

They just want a neat, clean package.

Back in the day when I worked on farms, the engine of a combine was located behind the grain bin and situated crosswise across the combine. That is so that the rear shaft was used in some way to drive the combine's motion and the motions of the harvesting process of the combine. I've not been on one in years, or for that matter, even close to one since, but yes, that arrangement would have the engine's radiator facing the side of the combine.

If I remember right, that radiator can get some chaff on it, but most of the chaff comes out the back of the machine and downward to the ground. Winds do cause the chaff to fly around the sides.

I was using (and probably misusing) the term "chaff" to cover all the parts of the plant that aren't the actual thing that's being harvested, mostly because I'm not sure of the correct terminology. My folks and grandparents grew and harvested food crops, but I've only done hay myself (outside of gardening).

Yeah, it's not like she had a burned out bulb that she didn't know about; she knew it wasn't working for quite some time, and she knew it's a requirement to have working tail lights.

“The actions of the Cashion Police Department on July 16 were egregious and unnecessary. The thought that a 65 year old woman, known to the community as the grandmother of two boys lost in the 2012 Piedmont Tornado, needed to be tased and arrested for not signing a ticket offends common notions of decency. The people of Cashion and the State of Oklahoma are no safer because of the actions of Officer Missinne. His unnecessary escalation and use of force served no purpose other than to torment and embarrass Ms. Hamil. We are exploring all legal actions which may be taken to vindicate Ms. Hamil’s civil rights.”

No safer? I can't count how many times I've come close to rear-ending someone because of non-functional brake lights. I don't care what happened in this loon's past, she resisted arrest, fled from the officer, fought when he removed her from the vehicle and assaulted him. He didn't beat her, he didn't do anything exorbitant, he used the least amount of force needed to bring an unwilling person into custody. I know this lawyer is only doing what he is paid to do, but his comment is still asinine.

This woman kinda reminds me of my ma...and most of her Pentecostal hen-pals. I love her to death, but she's stubborn as hell and a tazer would be necessary to get any point across.
