We have a rescue Blue Healer that gets fed twice a day. Her food dish is in the kitchen, you dump in the food, she picks up a single kibble and deposits it on the living room floor. She then goes back and get several pieces in her mouth and comes into the living room to (I guess) show us she is eating. She then picks up the one she left earlier and eats it Finally after the show she settles down and eats the food in her bowl. She does this every time we feed her. Crazy dog

We used to have a cat that would come into the living room every night and from 9:00 to 9:15 would run in place under the coffee table. The coffee table had a smooth wooden base, with four legs holding up the glass top. He didn't get any traction with his paws on the base, so he would run as fast as he could without moving forward as his paws slipped.

He did this almost every night until he was 2-3 years old, ALWAYS from about 9:00 to 9:15 pm.

He did it less often as he got older, but even when he was 8-9 years old would do it occasionally. Just once in a blue moon would come do his thing at 9:00 pm for 15 minutes.

Cats are crazy too.,

Sort of a common thing in rescue dogs. If you remember recently I was looking for a home for Dexter. He ate his food a few pieces at a time off the floor. He never left a single crumb though. Eventually he would finish off the bowl.

My daughters cat flicks more kibble on the floor than he eats most days. Whats weird he will not leave less than a 1/3 of the bottom of the bowl uncovered he will come and meow at you to come give him more food before he will eat more. Every night if its not refilled he is meowing around 9pm to fill it up for the night. Its the strangest thing you can take the food he spills and put it in the bowl and he will eat it but if that bowl isn't over half full its like he is rationing it for hard times.

At one point as a kid/teenager we had a bunch of dogs. The thing is they were able to free feed as they needed. However a dog would often get a piece of kibble and then set it down on the floor in front of them and "guard" it. Not eat it just sit there and wait for another one to come over and start to sniff at it. They would literally have a standoff over a single piece of kibble the size of a pencil eraser when a whole bowl full of the stuff was three feet away.

My wife's dog is spoiled rotten and he knows it. He also free feeds. I have a big gravity feed container and he can eat what he wants any time. Once a day he gets a special meal which consists of a little bit of whatever I am eating or some peanut butter or something I may have saved at some point for him. That is mixed along with a small handful of kibble and he generally will wait for that vs eating what he has so he doesn't get too full to eat it all. I give him just enough so that he has a nice little taste of something and then is still hungry and goes and eats some plain kibble. My wife started doing this for him early on and I have no intention of making any changes. Even when I take him somewhere he always has a special meal once a day.

I saw a post somewhere else not too long ago however about a dog that will not eat the food unless it has been in the microwave and heard the beep. They showed a video of the dog sitting there being given the food in a bowl and the dog turns up his nose. They pick up the bowl put it in the microwave and set a three second timer, the dog can be seen in the background shaking it's tail when the beep goes off. The same bowl is set down and the dog eats without issue.

Not dog related but similar was having a bunch of pigmy goats as a very small child (preschool age) and the goats were bottle fed and brought into the house to eat and would be inside for a little bit. They knew the sound the microwave made as if it went off while they were inside they would stand around and bleat wanting to have their bottle. It was kinda like the Pavlov experiment where a bell would be rung and a dog would drool. Eventually when they got bigger they would headbutt whomever was near the microwave, it wasn't long after that they were weaned and outside full time.

Our rescue beagle mix does something very similar. She may bring the first bite into the living room and either eat it right then and go back to her food bowl to eat, or leave it laying there for later. She often won't eat at all until we do. If we go out to eat, she will wait until we come home before she eats. There is always food in her bowl, but she is selective about when she eats.

Dawg will carry his food off like that sometimes, too. He LOVES to play with his food like a cat plays with a mouse -- nosing at it and tossing it around. Another thing he likes to do is cover his bowl up with his toys. Hiding it for later, I guess. Lol
