It also has to do with how much the truck squats while loaded; if they run tail-high while empty, they stand a better chance of not blinding oncoming traffic when running with a load (either in the bed or on a trailer) after dark.
That was one of the things that impressed me in my short time I owned a Tundra 7 years ago was it had electronic adjustable headlights.

I’ve lowered my last two SUZs for that reason. I didn’t want to downsize to a less than full-size. But I wanted to lower the altitude for accessibility, appearance, and handling.

Just do a bit of research on the components and the installer and don’t go overboard. 2” in the front and leveling the rear will usually keep everything working like stock.

Does anyone make a normal-height pickup that you can just step into with one foot on the ground (like older models)?

Thanks.
Look at 95 and up Toyota Tacoma’s. Bullet proof for longevity.
When I hurt my back years ago, the Nissan Sentra was too low to get into. I used it to save gas vs the Tacoma and to keep miles off the truck on my daily 36 mile commute.
The Tacoma was just the right height to step into from the ground and it was the 4X4 model.
Good luck.

On a side note...

While I don't necessarily require a pickup (though I would prefer one), I do not - REPEAT, DO NOT - want another front-wheel drive anything. This is non-negotiable.

Just sayin' ...

I agree with the rear wheel drive deal when you plan on using it like a truck.
I also like to get all my money back on a purchase ..NO depreciation.
My truck is a 1947 Dodge it is tight in the cab though. It was my first truck when I was 17.

Now For you I thought El Camino.

Boy we sure differ in this respect, If I didn't have a 4x4 my next choice would be something with FWD. I have had and witnessed rear wheel drive pickups get stuck on wet leaves..
