What a relief. I would have thought it would be much more than that. The first Reagan budget contained a huuuge increase in payroll taxes to shore-up social security, solve the budget crisis, cut real taxes on people that mattered, and make sure that the working poor were paying their fair share. I guess it worked.

Edit: the opinion piece at the op's link says the number is actually 182 million dollars, a long way from a billion, but still a lot of money even in these troubled times.

A billion was given away under obama. The amount per year going forward in $182M.

“The inspector general who performed the audit claims that around $182 million will be given to those without proper identification each year if we don’t fix these policies.”

So we've got about five years to correct the problem? Think positive. We can do it!

The politicians have a tremendous incentive to keep social security afloat and the money flowing: votes.
Put that in the balance and weight it against the credibility of the author of the article in post 1.
