Installing an aftermarket remote start in my new to me 2010 Silverado, ran across a couple wires that obviously were not stock. Started cutting zip ties to see if I could figure out what they went to and a little box that says "GPS this side toward sky" fell down on the floor board. After a little research seems like many dealers install these critters in case it gets stolen. Thing is you have no idea who is tracking you and why. That little box along with it's wiring is now in the trash can in my shop.

It's not likely activated. If it was you would be paying a subscription fee for it. There are other reasons it may be activated but you would, by law, be required to be notified.

It’s getting to be common practice for used car dealers to put GPS and lock out devices on cars where they “carry the note” and do their own financing. It makes it a lot easier to re-possess if payments aren’t made. I’m not familiar with what the device looks like, but I’d look around and see if there is also a cut-off device.

That's odd. Are you sure it wasn't the GPS antenna for a nav system?

Good points above. I know a guy who owns one of those buy-here-pay-here car places in SW OKC; “Beaters ‘r Us” or something. Anyway, he told me they routinely put those GPS trackers in their cars so they can go repo ‘em when the buyer stops making payments. But, if the vehicle did have a NAV system, that sure could be what the thing was for. I think I’d dig it out of the trash and hang onto it just in case.

Truck is paid for, it does have On-Star but not being used. Only two wires going to the box, one spliced into a wire on the OBD port, assuming it was the CAN Bus wire and ground. With access to the CAN Bus they can do most anything. For sure not factory.
