Just a guess, but I’d say they were assigned to be the MP of a specific quarters or barracks, not as a regular MP with base wide jurisdiction.

This . 5811 is the MOS code for MPs so that makes the most sense .

Crusty old Marine here. The above are correct. The enlisted Marine in a Military Police Unit who has been selected as MP of the Quarter would get to carry this badge. It is normally awarded along with a Letter of Appreciation or a Meritorious Mast recognizing the Marine for exceptional performance.

Thanks for the replies. That makes the most logical sense. Now, if I can figure out if a 1st Sergeant was an actual MP rank. Some folks say yes and some say no. The badge dates from the mid-70's.
