here is a cotton mouth I took pictures of.
I messed with him for a bit then pushed him out of the road into the grass where he could go about his business.

It was in the area of the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge during the flooding.
He was in his own area not bothering a thing. I figured he could go on living and maybe eat a rat or 3.

The little bugger had an attitude at first like most snakes but calmed down after a few minutes.
Suppose he figured I did not hurt him yet and I would probably not later.

If it was in an area where people lived close like in a housing area I may have done it in or relocated it.

Looks like a water snake, they do act like mocassins though water snakes go under water or will stick their head above water and will go from water source to water source. Mocassins will float on top of the water and slither across the top. Or could be a bullsnake aka rat snake.

Looks like a fange to me!!!
Yeowwww

And the cotton mouth snake will go under water when it is hunting or when it is shot at with a 357 HP.
I remember seeing that when i was a young kid and dad would shoot at them and miss.
Caught plenty of them on trotlines in a farm pond in Cushing.

I was in 3rd grade and could swim and dad tossed me into one of the deep snake infested ponds to see.
He also tossed jug lines out into the pond and made me swim out to get them.
Said he would shoot the snakes if they got too close.

Yea that makes me feel good.
Never caught a non venomous snake in those ponds they were all cotton mouths.
Had issues with them eating your stringer of fish or getting into the minnows.

I am surprised I do not have a hate towards snakes.
He would shoot frogs with his dads .22 gill gun and the frogs had 1 leap left in them.
I had to go into the pond and find the frog and do not come out unless you have found it.
Snakes want frogs also so I had to really watch.
I hated that old drunk most of the time.

LOL, Thanks Bud.. Its a common plain bellied water snake.. All the water snakes are rather plain and the patterns become muted as they age.. None are known for a sweet nature, I catch and play with the Rat snakes and kings snakes I come across, just recently a speckled king snake a chicken alerted me to..

Bull snake is Pituophis catenifer sayi, and a rat snake is Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri , 2 completely different families.

I never opened the mouth on a plain old water snake but look past the small teeth in the picture and look a bit more left..Looks like a very long Fang.
Does that look right?? For a non venomous snake.

My eyes didn't see a fang, all N American pit vipers , rattlesnakes, water moccasins and copper heads are front fanged from the top front.. Copperheads and cotton mouths belong to the same family of Agkistrodon.. The full size rattle snakes belong to Crotalus and the pygmys belong to Sistrurus ..
