During a conversation a couple of evenings ago, the topic of AR's in various calibers came up, and one thing lead to another and the idea of building one chambered in .22 short surfaced.

I now, why would anyone want to do that? Because we have the Second Amendment, that's why.

So, what are your thoughts? Some of you guys have built some very nice looking pieces.

Is it possible?

I’m unaware off hand of any 22 short semi autos period. Much less in AR form. Even the older 22lr autos I’ve seen specify lr only or are manual action with longs or shorts.

.22 short ammo is generally harder to find, more expensive and less functional or reliable generally than .22lr. Why bother unless close in squirrel hunting? Quieter, you say? Well, I know some of the .22lr can be fairly quiet. Then suppress it and it gets even less noisy.

I guess I just don’t see the point. I’ve got several guns that will shoot .22s/l/lr and I think I’ve shot 10 rounds out of a box 50 to test it in a decade and a half. Still have that partial box somewhere, I’m sure.

But if you want to, then gopherit!

Please don't take this too seriously. No one is suggesting that this be built, simply discussing the possibility. The question came from a simple discussion of how we have built AR's in every possible caliber.

Simply a question of...Could it be done?

Another option would be to just build an Upper dedicated to 22 LR. Then you might be able to modify the the buffer spring and gas system to allow shooting 22 shorts and the bolt still cycle. If I was looking for quieter operation I would tweak the Upper gas system and buffer spring to shoot 22 LR Sub-sonic ammo and still cycle properly.
