They don't take it that seriously according to at least one anecdotal example provided by the author in what is basically an opinion piece.
You petition the Government for a license to carry a gun. The government doesn't always take the laws seriously we're told.
Seems to me that the government that licenses based on shifting criteria could just as easily revoke the licenses on the same sort of criteria. If your opinion differs, I would encourage you to email your senators, representative, and President with a link to this article. Speak up, Make your position known! It's America. If we don't get this sort of common sense gun control, we'll have only ourselves to blame.

Their system is not one we should be promoting as some sort of example of the efficacy of putting guns in the hands of good people.

The presence and deterrence of an armed citizenry is notable and worthwhile, but not at the cost of granting control to the central "Ministry of Public Security".

You can't even transfer a firearm in the country without the Ministry of Public Security approving of the transfer.

Preconditions for obtaining a personal firearm license:
  1. An individual who is listed by the Ministry of the Interior as a citizen or permanent resident, and who has been in Israel for at least three years prior to their application for a firearm license. The Firearm Licensing Department can grant a license to a citizen or permanent resident even if they have not spent the last three years in Israel, on condition that the individual has served in the Israeli military or national service.
  2. An individual with at least a basic knowledge of Hebrew – the ability to answer questions, follow instructions and complete forms as required. The applicant's level of Hebrew is evaluated by a firearm clerk.
  3. Minimum age requirement:
    • A citizen or permanent resident of Israel who has completed compulsory military service – age 18.
    • A citizen or permanent resident of Israel who has completed two years of national service – age 21.
    • An Israeli citizen who has not completed military or national service as per the above – age 27.
    • A permanent resident of Israel who does not have citizenship and has not completed military or national service – age 45.
  4. A health declaration signed by a medical doctor.
  5. Completion of the required firearm training, including theoretical exam and practical shooting requirements, as per the Firearm Training Ordinance of 2018.

I wasn't promoting any restrictions, I was simply trying to point out that using Israel as a shining example of strict gun control isn't really kosher (pun?).

From the O/Ps article is would appear that yes, they have "strict" gun controls and also they are fairly lenient in their permissions to own one, even scary dark tactical types.

We all know that guns in Israel are pretty common, that they aren't afraid to use them, that they know how to use them, and we all know the results of that and it isn't the lack of guns that gives very low mass murder numbers like the other side would love to have us believe.

Y'all need a chill pill...

Might it be they are a very religious and old people trying to keep a young nation together and they are more focused on a common enemy?
The Israelis have state run schools that teach Judaism and emphasize tradition and observance.
