Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic Earmuffs

They don't work for me. I had my wife try them and they work for her so it's me and not the muffs.

Any thoughts?

Background: I have about 30% hearing in my left ear and 0% in my right ear. And I am going to attend Grant Cunningham's revolver course in early November.

I'll contact Kim, my audiologist about this and see if there is anything she can suggest. She's an NRA gal. In the meantime I'm open to any suggestions from the nice folks here.

How is it exactly that they don't work. Can't hear when they are active, don't cut out, etc?

I have a set of cheapo's and they seem to work pretty well for me. Can individually turn each ear up or down but it doesn't take much to be able to hear pretty clearly almost as if didn't have them on and it does boost the sound when turned all the way up. Everything has a higher pitch as well so deep sounds are not as deep. Also have to pay attention to the pickup mic location. Most of the time I turn them forward so they pickup what is in front of me better and mute the sound a little faster but some things will give a false positive, say for instance if the wind is blowing they will cut out a lot so I will turn them around so it is less of a problem.

Yeah I too am curious how they don't work for you. I've got several sets of Caldwells and the knob on the side can adjust how loud everything below "X" decibels is. For instance, I can turn them all the way up and a bird chirping will sound like it's sitting on my shoulder but I won't hear a slide on a 1911 slam home.

Exactly. I use mine when working on stuff as well. Running a miter saw gets pretty loud but it's only for a short time so taking something on and off is a pain. Leave them on and can listen to music that is barely loud enough to hear without them just fine.

I can't hear my wife speaking when I use them. I haven't yet used them on the range as I can't get to it due to the ground being too wet. I tried using them with my cochlear implant and that seems to work better, but at this rate, I might as well just use my non-electronic muffs with the implant.

With the Caldwells I have, stepping softly in leaves sounds like Sasquatch is coming at ya if you've got em turned up. Don't ask how I know what Sasquatch coming after me sounds like. Never again never again. The ones I have are $25-$35. I think my wife bought 4 pairs when they were on sale for like $15ea. Anyhow, they aren't too expensive to give a try in my opinion.

I bought a pair of walkers at Tin Star yesterday. My batteries were dead and no one had any AAA's. They work fine but I like the cheapo ones that Dennis and CC mentioned. The ability to one side off or down is nice. The walkers single knob controls both sides

A minor problem I’ve noticed at the range, but sometimes shooters put their muffs on backwards with the microphone facing to the rear.

I use in the electronic ear plugs by Walker. Their weakness is the very small batteries that only seem to last a few days. I use them mainly at matches so that I can wear my boonie hat if it’s really sunny outside.
