Yeah, Ray is on Hospice and is getting by.

I just got off the phone with him, he's just got fed up with some stuff around here like a lot of us do from time to time and he decided it was time for him to step away. He says he won't be back. I hope he changes his mind, but I respect his choice to live out his time the way he chooses. I can be a crotchety old f*** when I feel like it, and he's got it a hell of a lot harder than I do.

So anyways... he's as ok as he can be at this point. Trying to stay comfortable and he says the Hospice folks take good enough care of him and he doesn't need anything right now. He sounds like his little dog is on his last legs, too, and that has him as bothered as anything.

I just let him know to give me a call if he needs anything, and that there are certain of us here who would do what we can to help out if he'll let us know what he needs.

Thanks for letting us know. I've been worried about him.

Ok, I have to bring some levity to this. Back when I worked for Smith Tool that built drill bits for the mining and oil patch, there was a nursing home across the street.
One day in the threading department, a well dressed guy walked up to some of the machine operators and commented on how good of a job they were doing, walking around to most of the machines.
It was common for visitors to come to the plant and we prided ourselves about how clean and open it was to customers.
Turned out the guy was a walk off from the memory care unit across the street when a door didn't' close properly. They came looking for him, and helped him back across the street.
My FIL is in memory care right now, and has been for a year. There are some seriously messed up minds in that ward. It's tough walking through there as FIL is the last room down that hallway. Won't go into details, but that has to be the toughest job in the world for those that chose that profession. High turnover rate.

My Brother in Law works for Smith, owned by Schlumberger now, but still operates as its own.

My Dad’s biological father made a lot of mistakes as a young man. Left my grandma with 2 young kids for another woman and started a new life, abandoned his family. One funny thing was that he was a shister all the way around. When he left, he took a job as an engineer with an oil company near San Antonio. Said he had his degree in mechanical engineering from Plains University in Plains Ks. Which if you’ve ever been through Plains Ks, it’s almost comical. But this was the 60s and fact checking wasn’t what is now. My Dad was able to forgive and develop a relationship with him later in life. Well he developed Alzheimer’s in his last few years. It was strange because my Dad was the last person who he knew. His 2nd wife who lived with him for 50 years was a stranger. He’d call and say “Billy, I didn’t know the VA would send people to your home to take care of you. I don’t know who she is but she sure takes good care of me. They even let her spend the night with me.”

Smith is closed now in Ponca Permanently.
I worked there for 16 years, wife retired from there with 46 years. She locked the door on her way out of the office as the last employee and threw the key into the grass.
