Problem is that puts them going head to head each time because the Zero can turn to face the F14 easily. One lucky 20mm shell from the Zero would destroy a F14's engines and being able to see the Tomcats tracers the Zero could dodge. If the Zero is hit he is toast but head to head, so is the Tomcat. Speed and gee wiz toys are not always the answer. Heck many modern fighter pilots hate the thought of going up against a helicopter gunship for the same reasons.
When MS Combat Flight Simulator first came out, a friend bought it, and one weekend brought his comp to our house. We played on a LAN for hours.

He liked the modern jet fighters, and after getting shot down a lot (lol, it was his game after all), I loaded up with a WWI Sopwith Camel.

I'd hug the ground and he was flying so fast he could rarely find me, and when he did, his cannon would pierce the cloth covering of the biplane but wouldn't always kill it. I shot him down several times.

Drove him nuts. :D

The real advantage the Tomcat has against the Zero in a close in fight is speed. He can make high speed passes and turn far away from the Zero. A Tomcat won't be coming at a Zeke head-on, because he doesn't have to--he has a 20,000ft advantage in service ceiling and a better than 1,000kt speed advantage, as well as the aforementioned fire control systems, so he can get above and behind him (where fighter pilots always try to get in a fight) at will and kill him dead. Basically, he can bring the fight to the Zeke from a position where the Zeke can't touch him, so close-in maneuverability doesn't enter into the equation (unlike the Zeke's severe lack of survivability).

I have done something similar more than a few times using a FW190 (in Free Polish colors of course) Hug the ground and make them come to you. They have to cut their speed and fight on your terms.

Sorry but no. I Tomcat would have to be able to stay on the Zero's tail long enough to get a lock if using missiles or lined up if using guns. A Zero pilot would see him unless he was miles behind because those old fighter pilots always were looking behind them. It is why back then you tried to get behind and below them to be in their blind spot. Plus once in position you could just slightly raise you nose and let them fly into your cone of fire.

Midway isn't in my city yet but I will see it when I can. There was an old man that owned Mr.Neils sandwiches on 41st and Peoria for years. There were pictures of him in his plane in WW2.He told me he shot down 47 Jap and German planes. He said the last time he was in a dog fight his plane was hit pretty bad and he sent back to the states a few days later. The old guy was really interesting to talk to.

From what little I've seen in the previews, I notice a lot of CG imagery.

That automatically puts me off from wanting to watch a movie.

Hate to be contrary, but Maj.Bong is top U.S. ace of WWII with 40 kills, all in the pacific. Plus, being in Europe and the Pacific would be a little "unusual"

The new Midway will have technology in its favor yet the older Midway had a host of great actors and Woody Harrelson was the only actor I recognized in the previews

Don’t worry this is loaded with good actors as well.
Dennis Quaid
Mandy Moore
Luke Evans - main character in 1st hobbit
Patrick Wilson - Aquaman’s Brother, Insidious, conjuring series.
Aaron Eckhart- Dark Knight, Thank you for smoking.

Recognized a few others on IMDb but can’t recall.
