Paul Abel, former Pott county sheriff, owner, range master and lead instructor of the Shoot-N-Iron Range at Shawnee, passed away from a short fight with lung and liver cancer. He was 83.

Paul was quite a guy. To see his hands, you wouldn't think he could even turn on a light switch, let alone shoot a pistol as proficiently as he could.

He had a heart of gold and a helluva sense of humor. He used to pick on me when a crowd of us were there, but I knew it was because he liked me. He taught me everything I know about combat shooting and modern day pistolcraft.

He once told me, after a training session, "Evan, you can go with me." That was one of the biggest compliments anybody has ever said to me, because he didn't say that too often to too many people.

RIP guru. Until we meet again.

GED, so sorry for the loss of your friend, remember that you can rejoice in his memory every time you go to the range. Rejoice you should, because every time you go to that range you will remember him, keeping him alive in your heart.

Took several classes from Paul and shot matches at his range back in the day. RIP to a great man. It was a joy to shoot with him and hear his stories. My favorite was when he was pinned down by a guy with a rifle and all he had on him was a snubby. A true legend in his prime.

The wife and I took our cc class with Paul 8-10 years ago.. I've always been one to enjoy older folks that could tell a good story / experience and Paul had been there and done that.. IIRC the class lasted 10 hours.. Real life cop stories that were colorful and humorous.. Now that I think about it I don't recall seeing a single cell phone in action.. RIP Paul, us two are better for meeting you..

My condolences in the loss of your friend and mentor.

The strongest man that I ever met was in a wheelchair. Good character and strength is not always connected to physical attributes.

Yeah, he was full of beans and long winded as hell, but I'd give damn near anything to hear just one more story.

If you met him, it was a treat. If you didn't, you missed out.
