Why do so any phone users hold their phone out flat in front of their face and use speaker option when in public? I'm seeing people of all ages doing this, and I really don't want to hear their calls. Again this morning, in a Doctor's waiting room, women discussing her case with Medicade office.

Okay, I'm just old and cranky.

I saw a tech pundit talking about this, oh, 10-15 years ago. He said he was on a plane flying somewhere and some yahoo was nearly shouting about some confidential business deal. He said he wanted to get his pad and pen out and start taking notes in the most obvious way possible, but he couldn't see where the guy was sitting.

He also said that the only thing worse than hearing one side of a call was hearing both sides...

I've seen a couple of reasons for this. One, some people use facetime instead of phone calls, so they are actually doing a video call. Two, some people feel that cell phones will give you brain cancer if you talk too long with them right by your head. Three, some phones have crappy speakers for regular phone use.

Its possibly because they are using bluetooth to transmit the sound to their hearing aids because sticking the phone to your ear is worthless. The microphone on the phone held away from their face is a way to talk and not to listen.
In my case, and those hearing impaired, you will only hear my side.

My older sister wears two hearing aids, and has still to put her phone on "speaker" and hold it up to her ear. :/
Some older users can't afford to upgrade to the new technology. It's a shame because there is so much out there with the new tech.
There is some competition out there among the main hearing aid manufacturers. Walmart has them and they are highly affordable vs the $5000.00 per pair that some want to charge, and they are self programmable.
I'd ask your sister to look into them if possible.
