Long story short, sister and BIL don't have a ton of money....as he's been out of work for some time... and she's a teacher. have eluded to the fact that their 8 year old son would like a bow. Would like to get him something for Xmas as I know they won't be able to afford what I think these cost? I'm totally ignorant about bows though so tell me what's good and what's junk? I'm a buy once cry once kind of guy so I don't mind paying for something he will keep for quite some time.

Mods move to the appropriate forum if need be.

I bought my grandkids Genesis bows they don't have specific draw lengths so they can't out grow them. They were in $170 range but by the time you ad sights ,rests, arrows etc around $300 a piece

I'm also a buy once Cry once kinda guy but at that age, I wouldn't spend a ton . I saw some decent ones for his age at Bass Pro the other day that won't break the bank but will get him started

Genesis are cool little bows. They are pricey but you can find them used. What is your budget and is this just for fun? Also does he have a place to shoot? Target?

Both of my kids started out with and still shoot these. Daughter has killed deer with it and they are a legit 5yo to 50yo bow that they can shoot throughout as they grow. Everything is fully adjustable without a bow press, and comes with the tool to adjust it(allen wrench) and adjustments can be make right on the workbench or kitchen table.

I'll spend what it takes because he's interested and they can't swing something like this soon, but I don't want to overpay if that makes sense. If there's a "Glock" of bows out there, that would be great. Don't need a Wilson Combat 1911. I don't know the intended use yet, he's getting interested in the outdoors in general, camping, shooting etc.

Look at what these folks suggested and start hitting the pawn shops. With it this close to the Christmas holidays, there are folks that need money and will pawn their bows.
A cross bow may also be an option.
