The good news, it was a Mossberg 715T 22 POS.

The only problem is that I didn't get that deal...

Ok no, there are several problems with this story.
1. Brand new never opened? I doubt that. No one cares when they open the box. It would be very rare that you couldn't tell it had been opened before.

2. What's with the random pistol mag and ammo in the pic? No way that goes with a .22 rifle.

3. What local anti-gun bill is up for vote in that area? Seems that's when these kind of "accidents" are prone to happen.

4. Police say they can keep it and then LATER decide that no, they actually have to take it for 90 days? That's either a very disorganized PD or someone forgot to follow the script.

Big fat B.S. looks to me that the "upper" and "lower" don't seperate. Even if they did, no way it fits in that box. Ammo and mag appear to be for a handgun, not this .22. IMO a lame attempt by somebody with an anti gun agenda.

There has been a lot of talk already on other sites, about just that. It was obviously a staged picture for the article.

I've never handled one of those.Does it come apart? How did they get that great big gun in that little box?

It's a Mossberg 702 Plinkster in a molded plastic stock. Nothing more. It does not break down like a true AR and is not even like the traditional 702 stock that has just 2 takedown screws.
