He was drunk or drugged and uncooperative. He said several times he was going to do what ever he wanted to do. When he turned and walked away on the porch, my first thoughts were that he intended to escape by walking away and shutting the door, hoping she would just go away. Or, going inside to get a weapon.

Once he gets inside and locks that door, he has access to anything that can be used as a weapon. Being in that altered state, people are unpredictable. I’ve seen drunks who change from happy to fist swinging in the blink of an eye. He needed to be within sight of the officer and/or restrained. He was going to jail regardless, but she obviously had problems getting him under control.

Once inside she and his mother tried talking him down but he wouldn’t have any part of it. I think at that point she should have tried to stall till backup arrived while still watching him. I would not have taken that first shot while his mother was that close.

I don't "know" that she needs to be fired, but I "know" she needs to be retrained and be put on a very short leash. She also might need to be fired so she can be working at a different profession, or in dispatch.

Is what should have happened.

Her first really really big mistake was the half-assed Miranda at the very beginning of the confrontation.

Never ever even attempt to do that until they are in custody and you are planning to interrogate them.
