So I'm debating about getting one of these VR (virtual reality) setups for my son for Christmas. It's either that, or buy myself another gun, lol.

The Wife said no, but I have the cash set back I can do it as a surprise without touching the rest of our 'Christmas budget'.

What I'm looking for is opinions. Is it worth it? Is it fun? I've read a bunch of reviews online, seems the biggest gripes are sometimes a slightly grainy image and the headset can get uncomfortable after long(ish) use.

But the portability to other places is nice - he could take it to a friend's house for overnight stays. Remapping to new spaces sounds easy. No cords or need for a computer.

I'm just curious if anyone here has one and has found it to be fun, or was it a momentary novelty that quickly got old?

It’s fun. Still kind of a novelty, but way better than any other VR option anywhere close to this price. Unless you want to dump a lot of money into high end PC hardware, this is the way to go. Get the 64gb snd use the extra money on Beat Saber and something else.

So I don't have a quest but I've got the Lenovo Explorer. It's a tethered model (we have a beefy HTPC I scrounged from old parts) but has plenty of space and requires no external sensors since the visor is what detects the controllers. It's been more of a novelty than a serious peripheral to be quite honest.

We get people together for wanton beat saber battle and BS'ing around some of the firing range games. I do use the headset for some flying games like DCS or War Thunder but again it's more of a novelty. I think the quest would be a cool sleepover thing if I were an actual kid again.

I was thinking about a vr headset but honestly was looking at the Vive Pro. Used the regular vive a couple times messing around with Arizona Sunshine and enjoyed it. The main issue was the resolution was not high enough on the regular vive. Truly you have to have as high a resolution as possible since the screen is so close to your face. Simple way to put it is go to a phone store and hold a phone 4 inches from your face, if you can see the individual pixels and the grid between them you won't like a VR headset with that resolution. Look up a phone with a similar PPI as the headset you are looking at and try a few out. The people at the store will look at you weird but it's an easy way to make a comparison.

BTW you also have to have a GPU capable of powering the resolution you choose at 90FPS or better. 30FPS does not cut it for VR, you will end up sick.

If you do end up going for it here are a couple things I would pick up for myself.

To be honest you will probably play Airzona Sunshine as much as your sun if you like horror movies. If I had a VR headset I would probably play it almost exclusively. The only thing that is a little weird to get use to is aiming, the sights seem to be just a little bit off. If you play the game you will see the first time you actually aim to shoot.

And I would suggest trying it for yourself... https://www.level8vr.com/

From watching Funniest Home Videos, they're realistic enough to scare the daylights out of some folks, and make other run into walls (in the real world) when they get too absorbed in the game. :D

I've played the one at the place in Tulsa with the Go Karts several times and I think it's pretty cool. It's expensive as hail to take the family... I just wish we could get a setup where we could all play together, like they have there.

Someday....
